Best of the Area

Best of the Area is the Iowa City Press-Citizen's annual citizen vote on the best aspects of the greater Iowa City/Coralville area.

This year, we have expanded voting to more than 60 categories, ranging from restaurants and food to shopping and senior activities.

Hands Jewelers

Probably the oldest business on the Best of the Area list this year is Hands Jewelers, a 155-year-old mainstay of downtown Iowa City that has survived intact since its founding by John Hands in 1854, when Iowa City was about as far west as the railroad could take you. The store has not only stayed in business but thrived because of its longterm relationships with its customers.
